Troubleshoot - Player Not Detected On PC - Windows 2000 & XP
Troubleshoot - Player Not Detected On PC - Windows 2000 & XP
Solution
First and foremost the player should be able to boot and function normally when it is not connected to the computer. If the player fails to function, search the knowledge base for articles indicating the problem that you are experiencing.
Trying to connect the USB cable to the back of the computer may assist in this as there are inconsistencies in the amount of power provided to some front USB ports.
The player must first be detected by the computer, then the drivers must be loaded. This must occur before any software application will be able to detect the player so that you can transfer music to the player. Also keep in mind, if you drivers for USB are not installed or functioning correctly, then the Rio will not install.
If there is yellow exclamation mark or red ex, then the player is not functioning or has not been installed correctly. The player needs to be listed here without any modifying icon, such as the yellow exclamation mark or red ex. Once this erred installation has been corrected the player will now be able to be visible by a software application.
There are two types of players: an MSC PLAYER and a NON-MSC PLAYER; each type behaves differently within Windows.
MSC PLAYERS
Rio Carbon, Rio Carbon Pearl, Rio ce2100, Rio ce2110, Rio Forge, Rio se510, Rio Cali [Black RioStick], Rio Chiba [Black RioStick]
NON-MSC PLAYERS
Rio Nitrus, Rio Eigen, Rio Chiba [Red RioStick], Rio Cali [Red RioStick], Rio Karma, Rio S10, Rio S30S, Rio S35S, Rio S50, Rio Fuse
The troubleshooting steps listed below are the same for both player types, that is MSC and NON-MSC PLAYERS. The differences are that NON-MSC players do not detect under the DISK DRIVE listing in Device Manager. Additionally additional power requirements for MSC players does not apply to the NON-MSC players.
CHECK DEVICE MANAGER
- Right Click on the My Computer icon
- Click PROPERTIES
- Click the HARDWARE tab
- Click the DEVICE MANAGER button
- Expand the USB CONTROLLERS listing
- Below there should a MASS STORAGE DEVICE
- Expand the DISK DRIVES listing
- Below there should the name of the player. [If the player has an external memory card slot, it will be listed twice whether or not a memory card is present in the player]
- If you identify a red ex or a yellow exclamation point continue to CORRECT DEVICE MANAGER ERROR
- Otherwise you are ready to proceed to the software to begin transferring music to the player.
CORRECT DEVICE MANAGER ERROR
- Click on the item in Device Manager that reports the error, so that it is highlighted
- Right Click and select UNINSTALL
- Windows will ask to confirm the removal, go ahead
- Once completed, right click SCAN FOR NEW HARDWARE CHANGES [Windows will re-detect the player and install the drivers]
- Windows should automatically detect and install the driver; it is built-in to the Windows operating system
- Follow the on screen prompts to install the drivers
- Device Manager should now detect the player without an issue.
If the issue persists and you are not able to get the driver to be installed correctly within Windows, it may be necessary to boot into Windows Safe Mode. This is a diagnostic version of Windows where we will be able to remove "ghosts" or images of failed hardware installations.
This could occur if you did not install drivers when prompted and instead disconnected the player. Follow the instructions below to continue, please note that the screen resolution will be 640 x 480 [very large] and only a USB keyboard will function, CD ROM drives will not function either.
SAFE MODE GHOST DRIVER REMOVAL
- Restart the computer
- When the computer boots, hold the LEFT SHIFT key on the keyboard, until you get a boot menu. [This will read WINDOWS 2000 BOOT MENU, etc.]
- Select SAFE MODE from the list and press ENTER on the keyboard
- It may take a few moments to boot
- Right Click on the My Computer icon
- Click PROPERTIES
- Click the HARDWARE tab
- Click the DEVICE MANAGER button
- Expand the USB CONTROLLERS listing
- Remove ANY listings for UNKNOWN DEVICE, RIO or MASS STORAGE DEVICE
- Expand the DISK DRIVES listing
- Remove ANY listings for UNKNOWN DEVICE, RIO or MASS STORAGE DEVICE
- Disconnect the Rio from the USB
- Restart the computer as normal
- You should now be able to install the drivers correctly.
INSTALL DRIVERS
- Right Click on the My Computer icon
- Click PROPERTIES
- Click the HARDWARE tab
- Click the DEVICE MANAGER button
- Connect the player to the PC
- The player should detect and install the drivers.
- Windows should automatically detect and install the driver; it is built-in to the Windows operating system
- Follow the on screen prompts to install the drivers
- Device Manager should now detect the player without an issue.
If the installation still fails, then it is possible that the player is not getting enough power to the USB port, try the following.
- If you are connected to a front USB port, switch to a rear USB port. These ports typically get power direct from the mainboard and usually supply adequate current.
- If possible connect the player to a self powered USB hub, that is one that uses its own power supply.
- Try the player on another computer; however, be advised that the other PC could yield the same results.
- If the player works fine on another system, you can invest in a self powered USB hub to resolve the issue. Additionally MOST PCI to USB adapter cards will also supply enough current for the unit.
If the player is having other issues even when it is not connected to the player, then it may be necessary to have the player repaired or replaced. Please refer to the link below for warranty information.
